You would not expect the human resources department of a large company to operate without adequate human resource software, and this is because the software is vital for them to do their job properly. In just the same way, you cannot expect a marketing department to operate without having existing branding to work with. It is vital for the success of any marketing strategy that the branding on the campaign matches up with, and compliments the existing company branding and ethos. This is why it is so important to get the company logo correct in the first place.

The logo is the one piece of branding that is likely to be seen most by customers and clients, and you want it to give off the right message. There are a number of points that you should consider when coming up with the design.

· Where will it be used?

· Who is you client base?

· What image do you want to portray?

· What logos do your competitors use?

All of these aspects are important, as you need to be very clear about them and know exactly what you want from your logo before you design it. For instance, if you design a logo that is circular in shape, with a picture in it, this may not be the most suitable shape for your business activities. Letter headed paper, banners, page toppers, and other such things, suit a longer rectangular logo shape better. If your logo is likely to be placed onto the packaging of your products, you may want to consider the size, shape, and label type that will be used, and tailor your logo to best suit that. Getting it how you want it and getting it right from the beginning is very important, as once you have started using a certain style of branding, and logo, it costs a lot of money, to change it!

There’s this idea floating about – near me, at least – that being a graphic designer is always a fun job. That the average day goes like this: you get up in your penthouse apartment and stumble downstairs. Not to worry about the mess, there is no mess – your cleaner has seen fit that everything is sorted. You leave for work half an hour late but not to worry, your boss isn’t angry when you arrive. This is graphic design! Then you settle at your desk with a luxury coffee brought to you by an intern and slowly but methodically work your way through the day on your brand-new Apple Mac computer.

Wrong. So wrong. Not to mention that but often my job involves working with copywriters too. This is not always the easy thing it should be.

ask them for design suggestions: this might seem ridiculous, seeing as it’s you job, but you’d be surprised how creative and good at placement some copywriters are

Here’s a run-down of what you need to do to work effectively with a copywriter.

Communication: let’s say, for example, that your contract is for Red Diesel Bristol . The company want some new leaflets designed which incorporate text about how they are better than their opponents, with illustrations that make them seem friendly and approachable. Now, in order to both be on the same page, you’ll need to discuss a lot: things like tone, colours to be used, and even the words and word placement. Miss anything out and you won’t be working as a team. And remember, it’s as much about the copy as it is the design. It’s not like one is more important than the other here.

Don’t expect a copywriter to come up with amazing copy instantly: they may be just words, but that doesn’t mean they come easily! And always bear in mind that you can’t get anywhere close to finishing until you have those words. That’s something that should never leave your mind.

Fill them in on your change of plans: the fact is, you’re a team, so if you’re not coming in one afternoon then you need to be polite and say so. Why? Because the entire project slows down when you’re not working together, and you’d be wise to remember that fact!

Don’t be afraid to ask them for design suggestions: this might seem ridiculous, seeing as it’s you job, but you’d be surprised how creative and good at placement some copywriters are. After all, it’s also their job to fit in with the designer’s wants and needs, right?

For more info about a different kind of copywriter who sometimes has to work with a designer — the SEO kind — see the video below!

As news coverage and information pertaining to the environmental impact our modern lives is having on the world becomes more prevalent, many of us are beginning to turn out attention to ways in which we can alleviate the burden we create. For those who are seeking to install a more environmentally friendly way of live, there are many ways in which we can alter what surrounds us in order to do so. This includes those everyday activated we can’t escape from, namely ‘going to the toilet’. I have recently come created, after stumbling upon this great idea on the internet, a sawdust compost toilet. The sawdust toilet system could not be simpler, a bucket lies inside a wooden frame covered by a wooded toilet seat, and after each visit to the toilet a scoop of sawdust is taken from wherever you wish to store it, and sprinkled over your usage. When full simply empty it on to a compost heap where it will rot away and then it can of course be used on your garden if you wish. If you are building an outside toilet simply include a gas oil lamp to ensure night visits aren’t tricky. The only drawback with the compost toilet, apart from the less than inviting job of emptying it, is that it does require monitoring, especially if a number of people are using it. The compost toilet should be emptied regularly and don’t forget to ensure there is always a supply of sawdust to cover your business. TIP: Why not add pine needles to the sawdust to give a pleasant fragrance to the whole affair?

I’m a big Lady Gaga fan, but not for the reasons you might think; rather than being a follower of her fashion-sense, I am a fan of her principals. That’s to say I like the fact that she does exactly what she wants and not what others are doing. I think we can all learn a lot from this woman. To my mind, that is a winning attitude, and certainly something which more designers could do with possessing.

The reason there is so much shockingly bad design isn’t so cryptic, if you ask me. I think it’s simply a case of the crowd following the crowd. But remember one thing if you can: just because a million people think something doesn’t mean they are right and you are wrong.

Lady Gaga proves something.

I bring this subject up for one simple reason: recently, a friend of mine had to do a design campaign for Diesel Scotland . The problem was that the guy she had to deal with was adamant they should follow the examples of other companies. Replicate their style and “just change it a bit” to be precise. My friend spent ages convincing them that this would only end up in a rip-off scenario, but the guy didn’t care. A typical example of someone seeing success and following that rather than the advice of someone with a clue.

Still, one good thing about the crowd following the crowd is that there is always a need for really creative, trail-blazing men and women who have their own unique design ideas. If that isn’t worth celebrating then I don’t know what is!

This is going to sound possibly quite morbid, but you know where a really amazing place to pick up design inspiration is? The graveyard and the local cemetery. Yes, I said it, those place where they bury dead people. And now, on my break from staring at an office furniture london brochure – thanks boss… – I am going to tell you why:

Fonts, in a word. Headstones possess some really fantastic, really mesmerizing fonts. The older the better, because many years ago there was no standard. Because everything was done by hand and not machine, stonemasons were forced to produce completely new and unique fonts one after the other. This meant that designs grew and became more impressive as the trend for expensive headstones also grew exponentially.

Another fantastic thing about these fonts are the designs that surround them: scrolls and angels and all kinds of gothic-influenced ideas that you’d be hard-pressed to uncover anywhere else. For these reasons, all kinds of design inspiration can be found in your local graveyard. The bigger the graveyard, the more ideas. There’s an infinite amount of inspiration out there, and you don’t even have to go very far to look.

Try it out if you don’t believe me, and, with the older headstones, feel free to take a rubbing so that this awesome source won’t disappear completely forgotten. Surely I can’t be the only person who thinks it’s a crying shame that this wonderful resource might one day vanish from our consciousness forever, right?

Take a wander round your local carpet & rug shop and you’ll see that when it comes to design, they’ve pretty much got all the bases covered. And I mean covered: my local one is like something which Indiana Jones would have ventured into in Indiana Jones and the last amazing carpet. There’s every kind of material you could ever want a carpet made out of, and literally thousands of design ideas just waiting to be discovered.

This is never more true than when you pull out all the old carpets. The ones that have been hiding in the racks since the fall of the Berlin Wall. There’s a reason why many of them have been left hidden for so long, I’m sure, but that’s not to say that there aren’t a few gems in there also, because there are! I love it, I just love it. Forget DVD Packaging and anything you can find in a design magazine – if you need inspiration like no other then a carpet & rug store is the place to go!

The best part of raiding somewhere like this for ideas? Obvious, really: because very few people do this, you haven’t exactly got competition for all those wonderful patterns and motifs.

Go wild, I say, because the next big thing might just waiting to be revealed to the world. And better you find it than some person who is going to go straight on TV and make millions of dollars out of it, right? Yes, that’s precisely what I thought too.

The creative space saving designs is really appreciative. And murphy wall bed is a good example of it.

If you don’t know much about a murphy bed, it looks like a closed closet. Whenever you need to use the bed, remove the clips or pull it down and the bed is ready to use.

The mechanism of this bed is also very easy and you can search for it online if you are a do-it-yourselfer. You can place a murphy wall bed in your bedroom if it’s small to save some space. You can also use it in guest room to use the room for other purpose when you don’t have any guest in your house.

It can be found on large furniture showrooms. The only negative part is it’s expensive but you will forget about it once you start using this creative piece of furniture.

As someone with an eye for good and bad design, over the years some of the worst examples I’ve ever seen have been in hotel rooms. Formulaic, basic and usually in colours that even the 1970s rejected, many of the basic hostels and hotels I stayed in as a teenager backpacking around Europe were definitely the rooms that design forgot.

These days I can stay in places at least one step up the ladder from polyester bed covers and the Alicante bathroom with lurid lime green and orange tiles that used to give me a migraine every time I went for a pee! Now, I’m usually to be found chain hotels at the lower end of the spectrum; your Travelodges, Premier Inns. There’s hardly anything earth shattering about their design, but they have at least made an effort; a few colourful prints, matching bed covers, a light with a lampshade…

Comfy private guest houses, while more welcoming, can be a bit hit and miss, as the design is usually down to the owner’s personal taste. I recently visited Cornwall and had to stay in a couple of different hotels in Looe. The owner of the first had put some of their family photographs in the rooms, which was just weird, while the other was full of cats; real ones, pictures of ones, china ones, stuffed ones. And I hate cats!

One day, I want to have the cash to stay in some of the top design hotels in the world. The ones where location and comfort almost come second to how the place looks. Some have even been put together by some of the top names in design, such as fashion icon Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, who is opening her own boutique hotel in Madrid later this year. If it’s anything like her handbags, I would love to spend just one night under that roof!

The internet is good and all, but I think what we need is something different all together in order to be inspired. On the Internet when I see design that I like, I’ll often save the image into a folder on my desktop, or perhaps upload it to this blog so that everyone can see it. However, this is hardly a way for me to remember the image. Very quickly I forget it as it drifts down from the top billing on the blog, and that folder gets lost, and the file mixed up with a thousand others. For a designer, inspiration needs to be right in front of you. That’s why you need a wall of inspiration in your office or workplace on to which you can actually print and pin or stick up the images that inspire you. These images should be always around you, and once you’ve grown tired of one you can take it down. But the point is that you’ll be able to see all of this stuff without having to click it open, or without having to scroll around to reach it.

You should also have a corkboard on the wall. This will allow you to put up index cards that have reminders to yourself. This is of course a very good way of writing down any inspriational quotes. You can get a good corkboard at most good furniture shops. If you’re really clever you’ll go for one that has a white board as part of it. This will allow you to draw things too! It’s a must for every designer.
